Our flow measurement turbines are highly accurate and miniaturized. Thanks to an integrated, wetted thermocouple, turbine flow meters from DDM operate independently of viscosity.
Turbine flow meters are ideal for liquids such as oils, petrol, diesel or cooling water. The measured media flow through a measuring tube with integrated flow straightener and cause the turbine wheel to rotate. The integrated signal tap records the speed of the turbine wheel and generates a digital frequency signal that is proportional to the current flow rate.

Areas of application for turbine flow meters
Turbine flow meters are ideal for all mobile applications in development.
Due to the large temperature range of -40 to 150°C and the high measuring dynamics, coupled with excellent repeatability, measuring turbines are used in the development of a wide range of vehicles and machines such as:
- Passenger Cars
- Trucks
- Tanks
- Airplanes
- Mining machinery
- Technically sophisticated construction and excavation equipment
The small space requirement of the turbines simplifies the installation of this flow meter even in very confined spaces.
Suitable measuring media for turbine flow meters
All wetted parts of the measuring turbine are made of stainless steel, only the hybrid bearings are equipped with ceramic balls. Turbine flow meters can therefore be used for a wide range of liquids such as oil, petrol, diesel, cooling water, thermal oils, gear oils, kerosene as well as deionized (DI water) and FE water. Thanks to viscosity correction and linearization, a flow measurement system enables highly accurate flow measurement of the media over the entire temperature range – even for higher viscosities.
Features of the turbine flow meter
Turbine flow meters are generally characterized by very high accuracy. In practice, measuring turbines from DDM with a connected flow computer and linearization and viscosity correction achieve a measuring accuracy of less than 0.5 percent of the measured value. The flow rate range is also high at 0.1 to 350 l/min. The repeatability is +/-0.025% of the measured value (at a viscosity of 1mm²/s).
It is possible to order the turbine with a threaded or hose connection in order to connect it flexibly to different lines. During flow measurement, it tolerates measuring media in a temperature range from -40 to 150 °C. Thanks to its IP67 classification, it is fully protected against dust and can be temporarily immersed in water up to one meter deep.
Design and function of the measuring turbines
During flow measurement, the measured medium first flows through a flow straightener, which creates a uniform flow before the medium hits the impeller.
Depending on the flow velocity of the medium, the impeller is set in rotation.
An RF oscillating circuit is built up in the head of the turbine by means of a coil. This detects the rotating impeller, which enters and leaves the oscillating circuit.
The electronics in the head of the turbine convert the RF signal into a TTL open collector output signal.
Furthermore, the calibration data (universal vicosity curve / UVC characteristic curve) is stored in the head of the turbine. This makes it possible to operate any turbine with any flow computer (VCA).
The wetted thermocouple type T measures the media temperature accurately and highly dynamically. This is particularly important for carrying out the viscosity correction of the turbine. Communication from the turbine to the flow computer is completely digital. The thermocouple signal in the head of the turbine is also digitized. Digital communication ensures a high level of EMC safety. The measuring cable length between the turbine and flow computer can be significantly longer than in a system with RF resonant circuit generation in the flow computer.
Installation of the turbine flow meter
For installation, the hose is cut open, the turbine inserted and fastened with hose clamps or similar clamps. For pipe applications, the turbine is screwed in. Due to the miniaturization of the turbine and the resulting low weight, the turbine does not need to be supported. The turbine is connected to the flow computer (VCA) via the measuring line.
The flow computer can be attached to the rear with cable ties or M4 threaded screws. The linearized and viscosity-corrected flow measurement signal can be transmitted via an analogue output signal (0-10VDC or 4-20mA) or via CAN bus.
Calibration and maintenance of the measuring turbines
Turbines are calibrated with different viscosities in order to obtain the universal viscosity curve / UVC characteristic curve. This represents the turbine behavior over a calibrated viscosity range.
DDM expert TIP
We recommend annual calibration and inspection of precision measuring turbines. However, the actual calibration interval is determined by the operator of the measurement technology and can vary depending on the area of application and duration of use.
To ensure long-term reliable operation, a precision measuring turbine must be properly cleaned after each use. Cleaning is carried out by flushing with suitable fluids, depending on the system fluid used.
The following cleaning fluids are recommended:
- Type A MIL-PRF-7024 or an equivalent light solvent
- Type B Ethanol or an equivalent alcohol-based cleaning agent
